Reducing Single-Use Plastic in Your Restaurant: Where to Start
Reducing single-use plastic can feel like an open-ended project for a restaurant already managing a lot day to day. The good news is that it doesn't require an all-at-once overhaul to make meaningful progress.
A useful first step is a simple inventory: walk through a typical week and list every disposable item your kitchen and front-of-house use — cups, lids, clamshells, cutlery, bowls, trays. Seeing the full list in one place usually makes it obvious which categories are used most.
From there, prioritize by volume. Replacing your highest-volume plastic item with a plant-based alternative has more impact than replacing a dozen low-volume items. It's also easier to manage operationally, since you're changing fewer supplier relationships at once.
Finally, treat it as iterative. You don't need every category solved before you start — even one or two categories switched to plant-based alternatives is a real reduction in your restaurant's single-use plastic footprint, and a foundation to build on.
